Holy Week 2024 Bible Passages

By Gary F. Zeolla

The following are messages I posted on my social media pages during Holy Week 2024.

Happy Palm Sunday Everyone!

1And when they draw near to Jerusalem, to Bethsphage and Bethany, to the Mount of Olives, He sends out two of His disciples 2and says to them, “Be going away into the village, the [one] opposite you*, and immediately entering into it, you* will find a colt [or, young donkey] having been tied, on which no person has sat. Having untied it, bring [it]. 3And if anyone says to you*, ‘Why are you* doing this?’, you* say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ And immediately he [will] send it here.”

4So they went away and found a colt having been tied by the door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5And some of the ones having stood there said to them, “What are you* doing—untying the colt?” 6But they said to them just as Jesus commanded, and they gave them permission.

7And they brought the colt to Jesus. And they placed their garments on it, and He sat on it. 8Then many spread their coats in the road, but others were cutting down leafy branches from the trees and were spreading [them] in the road. 9And the ones going before and the ones following began crying out, saying:

“We praise You! [Gr., Hosanna] ‘Having been blessed [is] the One coming in [the] name of [the] Lord!’ [Psalm 118:26] 10Having been blessed [is] the coming kingdom in [the] name of [the] Lord of our father David! We praise You in the highest!”

 (Mark 11:1-10; ALT3).

Happy Maundy Thursday Everyone!

17Now on the first [day] of the [Feast of] Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus saying to Him, “Where do You desire [that] we will prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18So He said, “Be going away into the city, to such a one, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am keeping the Passover with you [fig., in your house], with My disciples.”’” 19And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and they prepared the Passover….

26Now while they were eating, Jesus having taken the bread and having given thanks, broke [it] and began giving [it] to the disciples. And He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27And having taken the cup and having given thanks, He gave [it] to them, saying, “Drink from it, all [of you], 28for this is My blood, the [blood] of the New Covenant, the [blood] poured out on behalf of many for forgiveness of sins. 29But I say to you*, from now on by no means shall I drink of this vintage of the grapevine until that day when I shall be drinking it with you* new in the kingdom of My Father.” 30And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives (Matthew 26:17-19, 26-30; ALT3).

Good Friday Verses

I cannot say “happy” about this day, as it is the most solemn day on the Christian calendar. But I did want to post a passage about it.

26Then he released to them Barabbas. Then after having Jesus beaten with a whip, he handed [Him] over so that He should be crucified. 27Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus into the Fortified Palace [or, Praetorium], gathered the entire garrison around Him. 28And having stripped Him, they put around Him a scarlet cloak. 29And having woven a victor’s wreath [or, crown] out of thorns, they put [it] on His head and a reed in His right hand. And having knelt before Him, they kept ridiculing Him, saying, “Hail! The King of the Jews!” 30And having spit on Him, they took the reed and began beating [Him] on His head. 31And when they [had] ridiculed Him, they stripped the cloak off Him, and they put on Him His [own] garments, and they led Him away to crucify [Him]….

45Then from the sixth hour [i.e., 12:00 noon] darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour [i.e., 3:00 p.m.]. 46But about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying [in Aramaic], “Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?” this is, “My God, My God, why did You abandon Me?” [Psalm 22:1] 47Then some of the ones having stood there, having heard, began saying, “This [One] is calling Elijah!” 48And immediately, one of them having run and having taken a sponge and having filled [it] with wine vinegar and having put [it] around a reed, began giving [it] to Him to drink. 49But the rest said, “Leave [Him] alone! Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”

50Then Jesus having again cried out with a loud voice released His spirit. 51And look! The veil [or, curtain] of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split! (Matthew 27:26-30,45-51; ALT3).

Happy Easter Everyone!

1Now after [the] Sabbaths, at the dawning into [the] first [day between the] Sabbaths [fig., the first day of the week; i.e., early Sunday morning], Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary went [or, came] to see the grave. 2And look! A great earthquake occurred, for an angel of [the] Lord having come down out of heaven, having come to [the tomb], rolled away the stone from the entrance and was sitting on it. 3Now his appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow. 4But the ones keeping guard shook because of the fear of him, and they became as dead [men].

5Then answering, the angel said to the women, “You*, stop being afraid! For I know that you* seek Jesus, the One having been crucified. 6He is not here! For He was raised, just as He said! Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. 7And go quickly, say to His disciples, ‘He was raised from the dead!’ And listen! He is going before you* to Galilee; there you* will see Him. Listen! I told you*.” 8And having gone out quickly from the tomb, with fear and great joy, they ran to report to His disciples.

9But as they were going to tell to His disciples, and look!, Jesus met them, saying, “Greetings!” So having approached, they took hold of His feet and prostrated themselves in worship [or, reverence] before Him. 10Then Jesus says to them, “Stop being afraid! Be going, report to My brothers that they should go away to Galilee, and there they will see Me” (Matthew 28:1-10; ALT3).
